Known History:

The 1980 Free-Way was manufactured by H-M Vehicles in Minnesota, acquired by Bob Schneeveis from a department of Stanford University; modified by him for racing. Licensed in Washington State in 1994. Modified for neighborhood street use by Victor Muñoz with the help of Fred Saxby, Ray Couture of EVsNW, Don Crabtree, and others.

 


Specs:

  • Motor: Advance DC  #K91-4003, 8HP continuous, 35 HP peak.
  • Controller: Curtis-PMC  1209B, 48-72V, 400 amp.
  • Batteries: 6 Dyno Group 24 Marine, 72 Volts.
  • Charger: Onboard K&W, voltage and current regulated, GFI protected, 120 volts input.
  • 12 Volt Source: Sevcon DC/DC Converter and gel cell.
  • Drive: Direct  with a Gates Polychain and Sprocket, geared down  almost 8 to 1 (for efficiency on steep grades).
  • Instrumentation: Cruising Equipment E-Meter.
  • Current Range: 20-25 miles per charge.
  • Top speed: geared to 43 mph, can be geared to much higher speeds (the motor could easily handle it).
  • Curb Weight: 900 lbs.
