For the Greeks the <em>sexual<\/em> symbol was therefore the venerable symbol as such, the real profundity in the whole of ancient piety. Every single element in the act of procreation, of pregnancy, and of birth aroused the highest and most solemn feelings. In the doctrine of the mysteries, <em>pain<\/em> is pronounced holy: the \u201clabor pains of the woman giving birth\u201d\u009d hallow all pain; all becoming and growing\t\u2014all that guarantees a future\t\u2014<em>involves<\/em> pain &#8230; That there may be the eternal joy of creating, that the will to life may eternally affirm itself, the \u201cagony of the woman giving birth\u201d\u009d <em>must<\/em> also be there eternally &#8230; All this is meant by the word Dionysus: I know no higher symbolism than this <em>Greek<\/em> symbolism of the Dionysian. Here the most profound instinct of life, that directed toward the future of life, the eternity of life, is experienced religiously\t\u2014and the way to life, procreation, as the <em>holy<\/em> way &#8230; It was Christianity, with its <strong>ressentiment<\/strong> <em>against<\/em> life at the bottom of its heart, which first made something unclean of sexuality: it threw <em>filth<\/em> on the origin, on the presupposition of our life &#8230; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Again, Nietzsche takes up the feminine cause.with its\t\u2014not \u201cwill to power,\u201d\u009d but <em>imperative to live<\/em>. (<em>Cf<\/em>. Clarice Lispector&#8217;s vision in <em>The Passion According to G. H.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>But again, like Lawrence, Nietzsche&#8217;s effort at picturing comfort in this oceanic feeling is a tad pathetic&#8230;like a woman in prison.
